WASHINGTON D.C. – Mike Shanahan is the new sheriff in town and he’s laying down the law for his new players!
Mike Shanahan is the new Washington Redskins coach brought in to turn around a struggling franchise. He’s got two Super Bowl rings as a coach with the Denver Broncos, so he knows how to get the job right. In an effort to get his players focused and disciplined, Shanahan has laid out some rules for all to follow.
According to Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Blog, some of his rules are pretty standard for NFL coaches. Run on and off the field, run to and from the huddle, and run five yards past the ball during drills. Some were a bit more surprising: Shanahan will not tolerate players double-parking at Redskins Park or parking in handicapped spots. If players break any of his rules, they will run – a lot.
“He was telling us, I have a list of 10 guys – he didn’t give any names or numbers or anything – he said there was 10 guys who didn’t do this, there were three guys who didn’t do this,” Will Robinson recounts. “Apparently, if you don’t follow the rules … you will catch yourself running after practice. He just wants you to be accountable and do it right the first time, so you don’t have to be punished for not doing it.”
Players shouldn’t expect Shanahan to implement the honor code and not keep track of what players are doing.
“Just the opposite,” Shanahan said. “My job is to make sure that everyone’s accountable to each other … The reason why you do have rules – and we don’t have a lot of rules – is to make them, everybody, beat to the same drum. And if you don’t, usually you’re not very good.”
