ENGLAND – One celebrity was the unlikely choice to win a soccer match!
Woody Harrelson has admitted that he didn’t take up the sport of soccer until he was 40. With that knowledge, he seemed an unlikely candidate to win the recent Soccer Aid match, benefiting UNICEF. As the match went to penalty kicks, Harrelson was the 11th penalty kicker and did not disappoint.
The third Soccer Aid mach Sunday night at Old Trattford in Manchester, England, pitted the England side against the Rest of the World. Soccer Aid, a now-biennial event in its third iteration, is the creation of British singer Robie Williams. It’s “goal” is to support the United Kingdom branch of UNICEF.
The match was filled with celebrities and soccer legends. Among the legends on the England side were Alan Shearer, Martin Keown and Jamie Redknapp. Among the English celebrities, including team captain Williams, were boxer Ricky Hatton, actors Bradley Walsh, Damian Lewis, and Dominic Cooper; and X-Factor finalist Olly Murs.
The legends on World team included French soccer star Zinedine Zidane, Welsh international Ryan Giggs, German goalkeeper Jens Lehman, Portuguese footballer Luis Figo and Henrik Larsson of Sweden. Among the celebrities for the World team were Welsh actor Michael Sheen, Scottish celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay; Australian actor Simon Baker; and high-profile actors Mike Myers of Canada and Woody Harrelson of America.
All even at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the match went into a penalty shootout. The legends took a seat on the bench, however, as penalty kicks were to be decided by the celebrities. With the game resting on his foot, Harrelson stepped up, struck the ball somewhat awkwardly and tucked it into the back of the net. The World team was victorious and a wonderful charity match came to close.
