LOS ANGELES, CA – Miley Cyrus has been accused of racism against Asians after a controversial photo was published. The Chinese government is not pleased.
The following photo was distributed online, of Cyrus and friends pulling their eyes slanted while sitting next to an unidentified Asian American boy.
Cyrus has yet to comment, but Asian American groups have already called for an apology. And now the Chinese government is also taking a stand.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China has announced the immediate barring of Miley Cyrus from entering the country. The government has also banned any broadcast of her TV show, films, and any sales of merchandise.
The ban is currently indefinite.
Foreign minister Yang Jiechi has stated, “Miss Cyrus has made it clear she is no friend of China or anyone of East Asian descent. We have no interest in further polluting our children’s minds with her American ignorance.”
An anonymous source hinted that Cyrus plans to fly to Beijing to perform for the Premier’s children in hopes of persuading him to lift the ban.

Why do some people find it okay to make fun of Asians, even if it's for jokes? Asians have been very much negatively stereotyped in America. From Chinese fast-food restaurants that do not, in any way, reflect true Asian cuisine to the very ignorant stereotype that all Asians have small eyes, is just plain racist. You expect all Asians to have the "fresh-off-the-boat" Ching-chong accent, when really, Asians are dominating all the top universities in the United States. Asians are not born naturally smart. The only reason why many Asians do so well academically is because intelligence is the only way Asians can succeed in America. The only Asians that prosper in Hollywood are those who do karate or impersonate Asians themselves (e.g. Bobby Lee). In other words, the media is significantly responsible for twisting the image of Asians. I repeat: most Asian Americans do not eat sweet-sour chicken balls and Kung Pao chicken 24/7, do not have deep "Asian" accents, and do not worship anime. Haha, you guys are saying that Asians are overreacting to this issue. First, I am a born and bred American of French and Italian descent. Second, I would bet an arm and a leg that you guys won't have the guts to make fun of Blacks in front of them. Intimidated? True. I agree that she is still a kid, and yes, almost everyone has done this sometime in their life. However, she HAS to get used to always being watched, even with her friends. Maybe one of her friend's friend gets a hold of this pic and feels they can profit from it… and this happens. Unfortunately she DOES give up some "child" rights, and she has to keep the "role model" part of her in the front of her mind. I'm sure she realizes why some people may be offended, and I hope those people realize she never did it with the intent to offend anyone, but ignorance doesn't take away accountablility. I don't believe she should be banned by any means, nor should she be railroaded over this. I'm Asian and I've worked in very racist environments (the military) and honestly I can say that it starts with your upbringing. Where I'm from (a very diverse part of California) no one would think to do what Miley did. It's a respect thing.. (or maybe a fear thing.)
But when I joined the military – it was the one's who had not been exposed to different cultures that those types of gestures/words came so easily to. (For example, a comment before about "we all did it.." umm.. i don't think so.)

I'm a Asian American of Chinese, Vietnamese, and French decent so I know where each of you are coming from. If this article is true, then our economy could be in trouble. Dear god people she is 16 years old and obviously having fun with some friends. What is wrong with this country. Can we just get over the celebrities and worry about our own lives.She is a kid playing around. I have a picture like that on my page, but does that mean im making fun or "mocking" asians. I have known asians who unfortunately despise being asian themselves which is just despicable. That asian boy in the photo can possibly be one who despises his race? Therefore not caring about miley and her friends mocking "asian eyes". This may not be likely, but theres always possibilities.

It's amazing how you guys know the story behind the picture, what Miley was doing/intending to do. Some even go so far as to speak for all Asians, despite the fact that you represent a minuscule portion of the Asian population. That is insulting to every Asian.
That being said, what's done behind closed doors is Miley's business. However, if she's not careful in making sure it stays behind closed doors, we have a right to comment on its stupidity. She was stupid in not making sure that it stayed private. Is she racist? Personally, I don't care if a 16 year old chick from the South is racist or not. However, given her raised level of media exposure due to her popularity, it is clear that she has a broad base of fans, including Asians. Because of her stupidity, I have to explain to my daughter why Miley was making fun of Asian eyes.
Some say it's no big deal, we've all done it. Really? You guys have had people take pictures of you doing stupid stuff and positing it online for the world to see? By her stupid act, Miley has managed to legitimize the stupid and ignorant behaviors of kids we are trying to teach against. I do not want my daughter attending school where how she looks can be source of insults and teasing. Unrealistic perhaps, because as you say "kids will be kids", but isn't the American dream that how one looks will not be the basis for judgment but to quote Dr. King, "the content of their character?"
This picture is the same as if she had painted her face black, put on a big butt, and went out to pick cotton for her friends to see. Harmless behind closed doors, but you want to be the black parent explaining to their child why she's doing that? Be sensitive to others, especially when you are in the spotlight of a megacorporation like Disney.

She knows that as a world famous superstar her private life is close to non-existant. There have been several precidences with other Disney stars with regards to "private" pictures being leaked. Fact of the matter is that it happens, she should know that what she does in "private" is likely to be leaked out onto the internet or other forms of media and that she should be more careful with demeanour whether it be in a public or private domain.

I think we can see this in two perspectives; a teenage girl having fun and a celebrity who is practically a role model for young kids. What if somebody's white kid looked at this picture, thought they were just making a funny faces and imitated it. The issue here is that Miley Cyrus is a international icon. She should know better. Regardless if the picture was taken when the kids were just goofing off, Miley should have known better. If she wants to stay with Disney and preserve her clean cookie cutter image, she must be more sensitive towards these touchy issues. This goes for all her scandalous pictures as well. I am ultimately disappointed in Miley. Her ignorance is astounding. I thought that she would have known better after the strings of scandals lately, but I guess she proved me wrong.
As for the lawsuit filed against her… Miley should not to sued or tried. She is after all a kid. Hopefully, she will finally learn from this incident and refrain from taking stupid pictures. Same goes for the ban from China. China shouldn't ban Miley Cyrus. They were right in banning Sharon Stone because her comment was truly offensive to THE country. However, this applies to ethnicity.

I think this photo is just a mistake on her behalf, and is in no shape or form racist. If she was racist, why would she be hanging with an Asian person? Think of it this way Leanne, do you want your little sister or your daughter to one day do that and get in trouble for doing that at school? Why would they get into trouble? Given that 80% of the crap in stores now comes from China, I think absolute ban should be on the crap we inport from there. 465 Million people (more than all of North America combined) are starving in China so a limited Elite can siphon all of the developed nations weath. In the process they are destroying thier own ecosystem by draining thier northern aquafers (hense all the starving people) to supply the industrial demand for water.
I do not speak ill of the Chinese people, many of them are my friends, but China's Govenment is destroying the global economy and ecology. With 1.3 Billion people in China and 350 Million people in North America I think it is realistic to say that The global economy can not afford to have the entire world at the same standard of living as North America.
So we have to put aside these silly claims of racism and focus on the facts. This is all about money. You now have a simple choice: Manufacture and buy American products, or become a third world nation while you give your money to foreign powers who do not care about America's prosperity. Based on articles like this one China seems to be able to make this choice and put thier nation first. Why can't we?

Because people have short attention spans, and if you don't react, they'll move on to something else. Proof? Next time you're at a party, count how many times you hear conversations about the sofa, and see how long they run.
