The way you react to compliments reveals a lot about you, says an expert!
“People generally respond to a compliment in some characteristic manner,” explained noted psychologist Dr. Herbert Hoffman. “When told they look attractive, are nicely dressed or have done something praiseworthy, they normally have a ready response that offers telltale clues as to what that person is really like.”
Here are what your reactions reveal about you:
– THE BLUSHER. Super sensitive blushers are “gentle souls, easily hurt and not open to suggestion or criticism,” says Dr. Hoffman. “They tend to be extremely sympathetic.”
– THE QUESTIONER. This person who responds to a compliment by saying “Who me?” or “Really?” is every eager to please.
“He gets along well with people and bends over backward to be accepted,” said Dr. Hoffman.
– THE MINIMIZER. Downplaying a compliment marks you as one who wants to avoid the spotlight and keep a low profile. “They have a noncompetitive and ‘live-and-let-live’ philosophy,” said Dr. Hoffman.
– THE TRADER. Giving praise in return to a compliment denotes a self-sufficient, independent person who avoids being beholden to anyone.
– THE JOKER. You pay him a compliment and he jokingly replies “You’re kidding” or “How much is this going to cost me?”
“This person values his privacy and keeps people from getting too close.”
– THE GLORY SHARER. Someone who shares the glory with others is a “team player,” a considerate, charitable individual who works much better in a group than on his own, Dr. Hoffman said.
