ZACH WINDOM

GULFPORT, MS – One Gulfport High School soccer player forgot his sportsmanship book at home!
Zach Windom, a senior on Gulfport’s soccer team, has been suspended for the remainder of the school year from any Mississippi High School Athletic Association activity. He will also be required to participate in a remedial sportsmanship program.
The fight happened during a state Class 6A championship soccer match in which Gulfport High was taking on Northwest Rankin High School. Arlington Shirley, a junior on Northwest Rankin’s soccer team, was Windom’s opponent in the fight. Shirley also received punishment for the incident. He will be suspended for the two MHSAA matches and must also participate in a remedial sportsmanship program.
The fight happened just moments after Gulfport scored a goal to go ahead 1-0. While the two players were jostling for position, Windom threw Shirley to the ground and started punching him. Referees had to stop the match for six minutes. Windom was also ejected just before play resumed.
Terrance Shirley, Arlington’s father, was deeply aggravated with the event. “It was the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that,” said Terrance. “My son is used to playing at a level of soccer where you don’ think something would happen like that,” he added.
