SAN JOSE, CA – A doughnut cafe in California has recently come under fire for its controversial theme.
According to the company: “Psycho Donuts has taken donuts to the next demented level. We bid a fond farewell to the tired, round ring of lameness, and the drab, time-weathered environment of donut past. Psycho Donuts has taken the neighborhood donut and put it on medication, and given it shock treatment.”
The cafe offers a number of special doughnuts, such as:
The Bipolar
The Psycho
MHT (Massive Head Trauma)
These bizarre combinations are served by workers in doctor white coats or nurse uniforms, who offer customers the opportunity to eat their sweets in a padded cell.
Sounds like a blast, right? Except some organizations are not happy with the cafe’s seemingly disregard for serious mental health issues.
“As the former regional administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, I appreciate an individual’s goal to live the great American dream and start a business, but profits should not be made at the expense of others,” said Oscar Wright, chief executive officer of United Advocates for Children and Families, a support group for parents whose children receive mental health services.
Public debate became so severe that Wright and Psycho Donuts co-owner Kipp Berdiansky held a televised debate on local channel KTVU. Ultimately, no agreement was arrived upon, and the store continues to operate while Wright’s organization continues to protest its existence.

I saw the two debate for a couple minutes on fox news this morning. Holy donut holes batman!! You can't sneeze without offending somebody somewhere these days. The guy isn't making child porn out of donuts!!. There are toooo many sensative wannabe victims in this country. As a humorous person…I am offended when somebody refuses to see the humor in these donuts. Of course I'm just kidding but i have to place the disclaimer because some tight hole will take my offense comment serious and get offended. Which would be very offensive. Chill out people.

As a parent of a mentally ill child, I see Psycho Donuts reinforcing the stigma of mental illness. Do we really need to make fun of the weak and poor? A mentally ill person is weakened by the illness. They are barely able to function until they accept treatment. They are poor because many are not able to work because of their illness. Words and atitudes do hurt. The names of the donuts reinforce prejudices expressed as PSYCO, RETARD, LAME, etc.
They could accomplish the same thing by calling their shop Wacko Fun Donuts.
It's bad enough that I get discriminated against. Now someone is making jokes about my illness and getting paid. All you above except one say what's the big deal. I'm sure if you had the illness you'd understand. Maybe we could have a donut store that made fun of cancer.
Call the donuts "chemo puke, at deaths door, under the knife, leukosite, breast removal, mega tumor". And we could have anorexics work there cause that's what people with cancer look like.
And wouldn't it be fun to laugh at the anorexics and try to force feed them donuts. Are you laughing now?
Oh wow man, what's great in a place like this is that "negative calorie" effect. The atmosphere of such places is so great that the calories don't count!
if that doughnut shop is supposed to increase stigma against mental illness, will this one, the "heart attack grill", where burgers, depending on size and unhealthiness, are called single bypass, double bypass, etc., and the waitresses are dressed up as slutty nurses, create stigma against persons who have heart conditions? yeah, right.

What pisses me off is that these unskilled donut servers and delivery people have the gall to call themselves nurses. Nurses are professionals who take care of real people and have college degrees in the field of nursing. These people who serve donuts should not have the title of Nurse, but perhaps "Psycho Techs". Nurses have a hard enough job as it is, without people confusing them for waitresses and service people.

Great place, Doughnuts suck, But I like the place. Onlybecauce it offends so many lame people. I spent my whole life savings to save the whales, but I have never seen one. Does this make me a Psycho? wake up and laugh.
I was definitely amused by the name and places. But after reading the above comments, I have to agree that I wouldn't know how I'd feel if I or someone close to me had a serious mental illness.
Regardless, the donuts are definitely awful. Not worth eating.
