WESTERN SWEDEN – A moose got drunk on fermenting apples and got stuck in an apple tree.

When Per Johansson of South Gothenburg returned home from work on Tuesday it was dark outside and the rain was coming down hard. Suddenly Johansson heard a bellowing noise from the garden next door.

“I thought at first that someone was having a laugh. Then I went over to take a look and spotted a moose stuck in an apple tree with only one leg left on the ground,” Johansson told The Local.

The unfortunate moose was desperately entangled in the tree’s branches and was kicking ferociously as Johansson approached.

“I thought it looked pretty bad so I called the police who sent out an on-call hunter. But while we were waiting, the neighbors and I started to saw down some of the branches and then the hunter arrived with a saw as well,” said Johansson.

The group tried to make the moose more comfortable but to no avail.

It wasn’t until the fire brigade arrived on the scene and managed to bend the tree to the point where the exhausted moose could slide out of the branches that the animal was finally freed.

According to Johansson, it looked very much like the moose was severely drunk after eating too many fermenting apples.

Drunken moose are common in Sweden during the autumn season when there are plenty of apples lying around on the ground and hanging from branches in Swedish gardens.

While the greedy animal was reaching ever higher to reach the delicious but intoxicating fruit, it most likely stumbled into the tree, getting itself hopelessly entangled in the branches.

And from what Johansson could gather, this particular animal had been on a day-long bender.

“My neighbor recognized it as the animal that almost ran into her car earlier in the day. She was pretty sure the elk was already under the influence,“ said Johansson.

When the inebriated moose was freed, it lay for a while on the ground, seemingly unconscious.

After emergency services had ascertained that the animal was still alive, Johansson was told to keep an eye on it and call the hunter straight away if it seemed to be suffering.

But by the morning the hungover animal had stood up and cautiously moved a few feet away.

After a while it went on its way, although Johansson suspects it is still skulking around the neighborhood.

“We often see elk stuffing their faces with apples around here but this is the first time we found one perched in a tree,” he told The Local.

All Pete the Moose really cares about is where his next meal of apples, bananas and candy bars is going to come from. You would never be able to tell that he was close to reaching the end of his life.

This special moose was ordered to be removed from a game preserve or destroyed last summer. He will now be allowed to stay on the land near the U.S.-Canada border under a compromise fashioned by state lawmakers.

The change of heart came after the 700-pound moose’s tale of woe went viral, producing a “Save Pete the Moose” website, a Facebook page that had 3,500 people “like it” as of Friday, and about 10,000 YouTube views.

“It’s the best I could’ve hoped for,” said David Lawrence, 74, who nursed Pete to health and tends to him at the Big Rack Ridge preserve. “They wanted to kill Peter.”

Last summer, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife said Pete and other native deer and moose living in the compound shouldn’t be mixing with the farm-raised elk because of fears that tuberculosis or chronic wasting disease could be spread, though neither had been found.

The state said either the preserve would have to close or Pete and the other animals would have to be put down. The issue wasn’t focused on the moose, but on the fact that the preserve mixes imported elk with native moose and deer.

“He just does his thing every day. If someone shot him and shot him good, he wouldn’t have cared because he wouldn’t have known,” said Lawrence.

Wazeelans, noticing for the similarity to their own planet’s name, were entranced by Palin, who won the contest easily after field dressing a moose for the talent portion.

Shortly after her win, Palin was approached by executives from Old Clandathuu’s Best for a brief advertising shoot.

Some are worried that the racy photos, featuring Palin in a swimsuit and tiara with a suggestively foaming beer bottle, could damage her folksy image or her credibility as a leader.  Sean Hannity decried these concerns as “sexist” continuing, “So what if she’s a babe?”

Given her renewed celebrity, one of Wazeela’s premier gentlemen’s magazines has offered Palin the chance to pose for a centerfold, should her election bid go south.

The McCain/Palin campaign has yet to comment officially on the issue. Palin’s relationship with Wazeela has been investigated before.
