WASHINGTON – President Obama will throw a fiesta on September 16th to celebrate Mexico’s bicentennial.
2010 is the year of the Bicentennial Celebrations in Mexico. Mexico is commemorating 200 years of Independence from Spanish rule and 100 years of its Revolution that began in 1910 when they toppled dictator Porfirio Diaz.
President Obama feels that the United States should celebrate Mexico’s independence. “We have many Mexican-Americans in our country. We should all celebrate this special day with them,” the President told reporters today.
The president is throwing a big fiesta tomorrow in the East Room of the White House (Casa Blanca). It will include pinantas, mariachi bands and gallons of low-calorie patron. “The President will be operating the margarita machine himself,” said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. Eva Longoria and George Lopez will do the Mexican Hat Dance together.
Mexican Independence Day is called El Grito (The Cry) is celebrated every September 16th of September by Mexicans all around the world. There will be a big celebration on the Arizona border tomorrow as well, when anestimated five thousand Mexicans plan to enter the U.S. for a big fiesta in Phoenix.
Influenced by the concepts of liberty, equality and democracy proposed by the French philosophers Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and by the war of Independence of the United States, Mexicans decided to start a revolt. It was 1810, and their plan was to start the war on the 2nd of October. Unfortunately, their plans were discovered in early September. The movement was in trouble. They had two alternatives: either abandon their plans, or move faster and start the revolt immediately. They chose the second alternative.
In the early hours of September 16, 1810, father Hidalgo, accompanied by several conspirators –Iganacio Allende, Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez – rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty. This was the beginning of the Independence War, which lasted 10 years.
President Obama plans to ring a bell to start another fight for liberty for the millions of undocumented workers that are living in the United States. “The President will ring the bell at noon tomorrow, but he hopes it will take ten months, rather than ten years, for the Mexicans living in America to gain their freedom, and become United States citizens,” said Gibbs.
Coincidentally, when President Obama rings his bell, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona will ring her, much bigger, bell tomorrow at noon. “My bell will ring for those Americans who want to protect their homeland. We will continue to protect the freedom and liberty of our citizens!”
Al Gore will be ringing a bell for climate change.
Michelle Obama will be ringing a bell for apples.
Joe Biden will be ringing a bell for tacos. The Vice President told reporters, “Taco, taco! I love my taco, taco!”
