NEW YORK, NY – TV political commentator Chris Matthews made a controversial statement during his State of the Union coverage.
Chris Matthews hosts the nightly TV show “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on news channel MSNBC. Like the rest of the cable news networks, MSNBC had a number of its commentators discussing President Obama’s State of the Union address last night.
As Matthews was explaining his appreciation for Obama’s speech, he made a very odd statement:
“You know, I forgot he was black tonight for an hour.”

Despite Matthews’ attempts to clarify the statement, many are appalled by the implications of his statement about African Americans in general.

Am in agreement with idea advanced by Chris Matthews.
Barak Obama is President of United States (first) and an
individual (second) who is of African American descent.
Would be more accurate to consider Bill Clinton as first
black President of United States; with Barak Obama as
nation's first African American President.
But to his credit, Barak Obama is considered by most as
(only) President of United States. And he does'nt seem
to have problems with that, unlike the media seems to be
having.
Matthews is a idiot – plain and simple. Just something more for the Media to feed on. Why not say -"Gee, for a moment I forgot Obama was reading from a Teleprompter"
Because him reading a teleprompter is so obvious that no one can forget that even for 2 seconds ha ha
