TOM DELAY ON DANCING WITH THE STARS
August 18, 2009 by Reginald Cunningham IIIWASHINGTON, DC – Tom DeLay has announced he will be appearing on Dancing with the Stars.
Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has announced he will be competing on the 9th season of the popular dancing program. Many in Washington are in no way surprised.
DeLay was House Majority Leader during George W Bush’s first term. He rose to national prominence for openly redistricting election zones to favor Republicans, and his role in the Terri Schiavo case. Lesser known is that during during his entire Washington career he remained an avid member of the amateur competitive dance circuit. While serving as party Whip for 8 years he earned 5 national trophies. In competitions he was known as the “Ballroom Blitzkrieg” for the way he performed Cha-Cha and Disco.
As a politician DeLay earned the nickname “The Hammer” for enforcing party unity and taking retribution on political opponents, often with a tack hammer. However before earning this name he was known as “The Dancing-est Republican in Washington.” When Newt Gingrich first offered him the position of Majority Whip he was said to dance through halls doing a perfect rendition of Gene Kelley in Singing in the Rain.
After particularly difficult sessions DeLay was known to drive his yellow Volkswagon to an abandoned factory outside Washington and dance out his frustrations.
DeLay was forced to resign in 2005 due to a legal investigation. At the time he was serving as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Crunk.
His appearance on Dancing with the Stars may be seen by many as a new low in the career of a disgraced politician. But those who know him know this will be the culmination of a lifelong dream.
