EVERGLADES CITY, FL – A group of Florida men videotaped and caught a 750 pound mako shark!
Jamie Bunn, Danny Massa, Jeremy Huston and John Monti went swordfishing on Saturday, off of the Point Everglades Inlet. About 18 miles offshore, they noticed a dead swordfish floating in the water, being circled by a mako shark.
The men decided to lasso the dead fish and draw it up against the boat, so they could get a good look at the shark. Angry over the loss of its food, it began biting the boat’s exhaust and propellers!

After much struggle, they were able to get the shark gaffed and tied. But after almost three hours, they were unable to get it into the boat. “We realized we had a fish well north of 600 pounds when we couldn’t get it in the boat,” Bunn said.
The four men decided to just tie it to the back of the boat and tow it into the marina, where it weighed in at 748 pounds!

  1. You all are blaming rednecks. How do you know that they are rednecks. It seems that all the hunting accidents are people from the cities that dont know @@@@ about hunting. It would seem to me that there is a good possiblity that this may have been dumba@@es from the city. Besides, rednecks kill for food. That is the way they are raised. YOU KILL IT. YOU EAT IT. Ask any true redneck. Also how many of you eat the fish at McDonalds. What do you really think that is……..SHARK!!!!!!

  3. They should of left it alone, what is the sport of catching a shark by ropes? then dragging it to it death behind the boat. The Shark wasnt bothering no one and it was just wanting to eat the dead swordfish in the water. You can tell this shark been in the water for sometime. Sharks are being killed in other countries for there fins and thrown back in the water to die. This shark died because it was tired and it was easy to be caught and they wanted weighed it for Bragging Rights!
We need to protect what we have in the Ocean and not kill them for sporting!!

  8. I am an avid offshore fisherman, but everything we catch is used for food or for research at local schools. I don't understand why they killed this shark…there was no point in it. We see and catch fish (tuna, marlin, sharks) bigger than this on a regular basis and most of the time we tag and release them. LET THEM GO LET THEM GROW!!! Killing that Mako was totally un-called for.

  10. this is deplorable! senseless killing of a top predator! The magnificent animals are being depleted by the millions and will have devastating impact on the food chain and marine environment! So these guys just happened upon a big shark doing what it does, clean up the ocean of the dead, weak & sick, and decide "hey, we should kill that thing"? Why, why why? The shark posed no threat to them! Are they even sure that it's a Mako shark? From what I see, it very well could be a Great White, which is on the endangered species list! Makos are next on the list as they are overfished by the asians for their fins and meat! I have studied sharks all of my life and am fascinated with them. Leave them alone and let them be! I'd like to see a real shark expert confirm what species this is, and no matter what species it is, doesn't justify these guys killing it for no good reason other than pure greed!

Why did this even become a news….now it will encourage others to do the same…..

  40. Facts, anyone? The article was inadequate, but it appears obvious that they caught it with a rod and reel, and only roped it to get it in the boat. And Mako meat IS prized table-fare, though they should have released it, particularly one this big, if they did not want to stuff whomever with mercury. And Makos don't clean up garbage, they sneak up on swordfish and cut their caudal peduncle, disabling them… so sneaking up on them and throwing them a bait's fair enough. It went the way of a warrior, not the way of a cow or pig… but still should have been released. Still, not nearly as cruel as keeping a pack animal shut in by itself day after day… for instance.

  44. The human race has devolved into the lowest form of life on this planet. Killing for the pleasure of killing, without cause or reason. Every thing on this planet has a purpose, that which completes the balance of all that occurs. When we kill for the sake of killing we disrupt that balance. Humans are killing their way right out of existence. This Mako Shark should look great stuffed and mounted to the living room wall. Right next to the Rino, Grizzly Bear, American Bison and the Gray Wolf. Way to go guys, you should be proud, you could not only have the Last Mako ever mounted, but the largest and oldest. Hey with a little putty you can fill all those gaff holes which by the way seems to me to be an illegal way to fish.

    Reply
  45. This IS crazy, ya'll are upset about an animal dying and would have prefered for the humans to die?! (It attacked the boat, what's to stop it from doing it again?) Get your priorities straight, human life is more important, and you can eat Makos.

  46. Actually, the story posted here is remiss in the fact that the shark was not killed for sport, but was indeed cut up for food and distributed to over two-dozen people; Mako is actually a very good quality meat, and this shark went on to feed many.

    Reply
  47. hmm…they had to lure it…….sounds like fishing to me, just without using a rod and reel. Think about it. A rod and reel with bait on it is the same, you are luring a fish to come close so you can hook it……. sounds like what they did, the shark was hooked (gaffed) when it came close to the bait……

  48. First off, the news never gives you everything about an article so it is just wrong to jump to conclusions that these people just killed the fish for fun. Having dealt with the media on numerous occassions, I have always seen how they never tell the whole truth of a story. They only tell you what they think you want to hear. Who is to say that these "fisherman" didn't decide to catch the shark for consumption. They were out fishing for the day. Perhaps they just didn't have the right equipment to catch such a large fish and just decided to try and catch it the old fashion way (hook and rope). Marko Shark is a great tasting fish and is well consumed in the US.

These fisherman should be fined big time and a new law should be created to avoid this animal abuse. Period.

  61. I have no idea why this made the news or why everyone is displaying so much vitriol for the fishermen.
The Mako shark is an edible fish, just like Tuna, Swordfish, Halibut, Salmon, etc, etc. I don't know why everyone is trashing the fishermen, they broke no laws or did anything unethical. They just went fishing and caught a fish.
This shark is not a record catch but what if they had caught a large Sea Bass and took their catch that's what fishermen do. They catch fish, kill them and take them home so what…?

  62. makos are very tasty fish. they are similar in taste to swordfish. assuming these folks are going to eat the fish, there is really no call for outrage.
swordfishing is so much worse. ( i do realize the shark was the one that killed the swordfish) 20 years ago, the average swordfish caught was over 300 lbs. now they are less than 100. ( i won't eat swordfish for that reason). there is a show on discovery that follows a swordboat. i don't think that will make these fisherman (or any others) more likely to kill swordfish just because it is on tv as many of the comments suggest.
and there is way too much misguided sexism.

Go flame the mega-companies that mass kill whales…this was one shark, fair game. As an American, I am thankful for the right to catch fish and release them as I please. If I keep one big one…oh well, sucks to be the fish. Im sure the shark will go toward research at a local university, etc. So, I wonder if the "redneck" shots are actually made because people are insecure about "real life." Look outside of your little world…it's not a nice place. I may not agree with your statement(s) but I will defend your right to say it to the death…for that's what I do. I am a fisherman and believe leaving the largest to breed is the best policy. According to the wikipedia this type of shark could reach 13ft and 2,000 record being almost 1800 lbs. What it does appear like is that there are many people who are against hunting and fishing who are trying to prove a point without understanding the sitituation. Before you say to much more take a look at the farms that produce the animals you eat every day and how those animals are treated.

Most of you need to find a hobby, and point your attention to real injustices like the cattle ranchers that have 1,000 head in a fenced area made for 500 head. 86. Before issues arose concerning endagerment Mako used to be highly sought as a gamefish for two reasons. 1). because of the spectacular challenge they pose to get to the boat (they are known for their ability to breach much the way Marlin and other prized saltwater species do). 2). because their flesh is argueably the best tasting cut of fish steak you'll ever have the pleasure to consume. A shark this size could supply the fishermen and their friends/families with multiple months supply of delicious frozen steaks.
This said, the way in which the Mako was harvested is unsportsmanlike conduct.

Swordfish are quit large, upwards of 1,400lbs + So in reality, they caught a "fat" shark that had a full belly! I recently moved to Florida and I hate it! I will be moving very shortly due to the fact that this state is so bass ackwards it's unreal. These 3 guys are the majority in this state. I'm actually surprised they didn't stick dynamite in it, laugh about the explosion and then whip out their wallets and share pics of their own sisters naked to each other. Ya no wat I meen! Again, this is from a state that said, "Arts what, Orlando doesn't need no performing arts center thing. What we gonna need that for?"

What you folks fail to realize is that a shark is a vicious man eating apex predator killing machine that only takes breaks from it's orgiastic eating of desperate Haitian and Cuban refugees to have movements. Sharks are actually occupying a niche that can readily be filled by Norwegian fishing vessels and should consequently be eradicated immediately.

If they would had recorded the feeding and submitted what they found, they would have been hailed in the marine community for capturing such an event. Instead, they acted like adolescent children, doing harm without even thinking of the consequences.
Yes, this is the part of human behavior that will ultimately be our undoing.

Secondly , it never said the shark died and it never said they didn't return it back into wild-life. And thirdly , if they did kill the shark, notice that , at first, they were going sword fishing which is when you catch a sword fish and take it in for meat so what makes it less likely that they did the same for the shark ? I am not saying what they did was wrong or right (Depending on exactly what they did;this article is very vague) I am saying that people must read things with an open mind and not a hideously disfigured one . We all (hopefully) went to school for a reason .
