ADDIS ABABA – The head of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia has stated that the Ark of the Covenant will be revealed to the public.
Abuna Pauolos is in Vatican City this week, meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. It is from this holy city that Pauolos confirmed the Ark of the Covenant’s presence in Ethiopia, and that he will be announcing its unveiling this Friday: “Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses and the center of searches and studies for centuries.”
The Ark is a sacred container written of in the Old Testament. It is said to contain the original Ten Commandments tablets, as well as some manna, the mythical food that the Israelites ate while wandering through the desert.
It was made of wood, but covered in pure gold. On top, two cherubim faced each other, their wings outspread to form the “throne of God”. It’s supposed weight has been widely debated, with numbers ranging from 180 to 8,000 pounds!
Theologians have never been able to agree on the Ark’s fate, but many believe Menelik I brought it to Ethiopia. Menelik was the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, and was the first Jewish emperor of Ethiopia.
Today, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church boasts that it sits under lock and key in the Chapel of the Tablet, near the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion. It is only used occasionally in ritual processions, but almost no one has seen it, let alone gotten photographic evidence.

As far as this being the authentic Ark of the Covenant is a matter of debate. Some believe the ark no longer exists because of Jeremiah 3:16. Its purpose was completed upon the salvation provided by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, so the Ark will no longer be necessary after Jesus Christ returns to rule during His millenial reign.

Elin is correct, the Ark was still in Jerusalem in 70 AD when the Temple was destroyed by the Romans, so it could not have been n Ethiopia since the time of Solomon. You are correct when you say that something that requires faith to believe cannot be absolutely proven. That is the very essence of faith. This is explained in Hebrews 11:1
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
This includes the faith necessary to believe that God, One who is not directly visible, exists. The author of Hebrews goes on to say this a little further in Hebrews 11:6
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
However, it is not blind faith. Jesus gave a great example to Nicodemus in John 3:8.
"The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit."
You cannot see the wind, but you definitely know it exists based on its effect on objects in its path. So it is with God; we can see evidence of His presence all around us.

Additionally, if this was really the Ark of the Covenant, it was a covenant (agreement or contract) between the ancient Israelites and God; not anyone today. If there is to be an unveiling, this object would become an object of worship (idolatry). We live in a wicked generation, the Bible says and only a wicked generation seeks a sign. We are to walk by faith not by sight. Jesus was right on when he said, that we know not what we do. (We don't know what we are doing).

It seems highly unlikely that YHWH would allow the ark to fall into the hands of the "Beast of Rome" (Vatican) . The Ark was hidden prior to the Babylonian seige of Jerusalem & has remained safely tucked away ever since. The Beast-of-Rome obtaining a fake version with some plausable reasons for it possibly being genuine is far more likely. I do not know what would remain of the original wood used in making the Ark of the Covenant, it should have disintegrated long ago. The Mercy seat on the other hand which some would describe as the lid of the Ark, was made of solid gold, and without physical damage would be as pristine and unblemished as it was in the day it was made. The Ark and the Mercy Seat are two distinct and separate things even though they are usually considered as one object. If two objects, one of wood and the other of gold are considered together, the gold is almost aways considered the most valuable. God gave us a choice a choice between Him and whatever you’d like to believe. He wanted us to choose Him. Our God is a jealous but loving God. He could have easily made us follow Him by being a tyrant. He decided to use a democratic view point. We already know the outcome, we just need to follow the light! So in short God gave you a choice to believe in the unseen and the “sometimes unproven"… to trust in Him and His Word.
I believe it is fair, to say or to know that God does not contradict himself. I would say according to the bible the most important thing in the Old Testament besides God himself was the Ark (item)… and strangely in the New Testament replacing it is the son of God, and both are covenants with us – Gods presence rested on the ark which made it a powerful item to touch or even look at…that’s why it had handles for the Israelites to carry it with, some would fall dead if it was touched, it was even covered. Imagine the sun glistening on the ark …making the ark a bright light on their path, killing poisonous snakes, scorpios and burning thorn bushes along the way… God cleared the path for His nation.
Jesus on the other hand came to save us He became our unity with God, a more reachable touchable presence of God amongst us. God calls His son, Jesus, the light and the way. As a christian scholar of the Torah,and the Bible, i feel that the most important thing is to focus on Christ whom is the REAL ARK of God. He is the real covenant between God and man. I always wounder what happened to the OLD Ark of the covenant. One day the Lord answered me this question and said to me, not to worry about it. He said 'I am' the real Ark today. I felt with my face to the ground and repented before Him. I had found my real Ark. No more looking for outwards appearances. Thank Lord Jesus.

If this is truly the Arc it is wrong for Ethiopia to be in possession of it. Look at the condition Ethiopia is in. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this. If God was happy with Ethiopia having possession of the Arc it would be a fruitful and thriving place and look at the condition of the country.They are not being blessed by having the Arc,but cursed. The ark has little value for the Catholics ( only historical value as it was a part of the Old Testament ). The ark has no purpose anymore as the ark symbolised Mary, the Mother of God.
