WEBSTER, MA – Massachussettes officials have admitted that some signs pointing to the famous lake are spelled wrong.
Local newspaper, Worcester Telegram & Gazette, broke the story, after having covered the spelling errors since 2003. Specifically, the signs on Route 12 and Roue 193 have an “o” where a “u” should be, at letter 20, and an “h” instead of “n” at letter 38.
The lake is more commonly known as Lake Chaubunagungamaug, or even Webster Lake. The name, often said to be the longest place name in America, is from the language of the Nipmuc tribe. It loosely translates to “fishing at the boundary”, as it was a fishing spot located at the boundaries of multiple tribal territories.
The Chamber of Commerce is researching to see who originally painted the misspelled signs, in order to decide who will pay for the replacements. While there have been a number of different spellings in the past, the 45-letter Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg variant has been considered the official one.
