HORSE MEAT GOES ON SALE ACROSS U.S.

TULSA, OK —  Congress has just greenlit horse slaughterhouses.  Horse meat will be on shelves across American within two weeks.
Horses can now legally be  butchered in the U.S. for human consumption.  Congress enthusiastically lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, which allows slaughterhouses to get up and running as soon as possible.
“We want horse meat on everyone’s dinner table for the holidays,” said Tyler Knox, a horse slaughterhouse expert from San Antonio, Texas.  “There’s nothing as tasty as fresh horse meat.”

President Obama is reportedly looking forward to eat a plate of lean horse rib for a State Dinner to be held on December 15th.  “It’s about time we ate horses in this country,” said a source close to a White House chef.  “Horse and potatoes.  That’s the All-America meal, right there.”
Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obama signed into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.

The USDA issued a statement  saying there are no slaughterhouses in the U.S. that butcher horses for human consumption now, but when they do open, they will\ conduct inspections to make sure federal laws were being followed. USDA spokesman Chuck Griffin declined to answer questions beyond what was in the statement.  But he went on to say that  he was a lover of horse liver.
The last U.S. slaughterhouse that butchered horses closed in 2007 in Illinois, and animal welfare activists warned of massive public outcry in any town where a slaughterhouse will open.
Slaughterhouses are scheduled to open in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and in one county in New Jersey.   Elmer Pacamando, president and  of The Humane Society of the United States. “Local opposition will emerge and you’ll have tremendous controversy over slaughtering Trigger and Mr. Ed.”
But pro-slaughter activists say the ban had unintended consequences, including an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses, and that they are scrambling to get dozens of plants going — in Wyoming, North Dakota, Nebraska and Missouri.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said the poor economy has resulted in “sad cases” of horse abandonment and neglect and lifting the ban will give Americans a shot at regaining lost jobs and making sure sick horses aren’t abandoned or mistreated.  He reportedly added,  “And horse meat gives you a lot of energy.  It’s good for you.  Montana horse meat is the best.”
Giddyup!

  1. These people are sick! And don’t use overpopulation as an excuse for this because I’m pretty sure humans are overpopulating the planet as well!

  2. Well it is about time. Wonderful news !!!
I have eaten Horse meat before and really I can see no problems with it's consumption. It is leaner than most other meats on the market.
What really is the difference between Horse meat and a cuddly lamb.
I admit I do eat some differnt types of meat. Rabbit, Squab, American Bison, etc
I will look forward to eating it again !!
    Regards,
    John

    • do you have no concern about eating carcenogenic flesh then? Most horse owners have given bute to their horses, it has cancer causing agents. That is only one drug we give our horses, many others are also carcenogenic to humans also.
You need to educate yourself before you make such a flippant comment. I guess you can call it lean meat, after all when you get sick you sure will get lean!

  3. do these people really understand what is in a horse? its not just meat. people give vaccines and medication to their horse that should not be consumed. what happens next when people start getting cancer and other illnesses from cntaminated horse meat?

    • Do you know that people give COWS, PIGS, CHICKENS vaccines and medications as well? Sheesh. The ignorance of agricultural production methods in this country is staggering.

  4. hanibal the canibal says I prefer to eat a fatass human than a horse!!!There is nothing humane about slaughtering a wild horse they shot them in the stomach to bring them in then they run bob wire through their noses, what a bunch of assholes in this country why doesn't some rich person try to help???

  5. I can not wait for all that wanted horse meat to rot in hell. Those in favor should not oppose abortion either. With all of the chemicals that go into raising and keeping a horse healthy will make you ill with Cancer. Wormers have arsenic in it. If that is ok then it is fine to have arsenic in apple juice and there is antifreeze in any of your stand potato chips. What a bunch of greedy basters. It is different with rabbit, sqab, bison they do not go to the slaughter houses. They are farm raised for human consumption. They shot on the spot in hunting instant death not a prolong death. I will say it again what bunch of IDIOTS that support this bill.

    • You are so right Clairese. This kind of post just makes me sad. What everyone is talking about is the authorization of HR 2112 – an appropriations bill which authorizes spending on issues already decided MONTHS ago. Obama isn't authorizing the reopening of slaughter plants. And if someone named Tyler Knox wants horse meat on everyone's table, well that's a personal statement, not something sanctioned by the White House.
This kind of crap really makes me angry because it takes the focus away from the real issues – caring for the Hundred Thousand Plus horses that become unwanted each year. WHY IS THAT???? Why are we not focused on answering the question of WHY are there so many horses that people cannot care for? Let's get people back to work, make sure they can stay in their homes and on their farms where they can take care of the horses they have, control breeding, and come up with some better end of life solutions and stop focusing on the Pretend Problem of who's
      eating horse meat. Jeesh!

  6. While the recent ruling to fund the inspections on horse meat again in the US seems to be some sort of victory for the pro-slaughter groups, they need to remember why they were shut down in the first place. Are these problems being addressed?
1.Which horses would be slaughtered in a country where we do not breed horses for human consumption. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy and Japan are quickly fighting not to take horse meat from Canada and Mexico when the horses have come from the US. I would imagine that if I loved to eat horse meat and I lived in a country where this was the “norm” I certainly would not want to eat meat that came from a horse slaughtered in the US. Studies have been done where slaughter bound horses were saved and tested and it was determined that if the horse had been slaughtered that the meat would have been contaminated with drugs not meant for human consumption.
    2. When plants closed, residents reported sanitation problems and illegal dumping of millions of gallons of blood. In 2007 Cavel before they were closed, had been charged with 17 violations in just 3 months. Will this be fixed? Just last year, the Bouvry's horse slaughter plant in Canada was closed for sanitation reasons.
    3. Will a humane method be found? Has this been addressed? "In its 2000 report on methods of Euthanasia, the American Veterinary Medical Association stated that the captive bolt gun should not be used on equines unless head restraint could be assured. This is because of the relatively narrow forehead of equines, their head shyness and the fact that the brain is set back further than in cattle for which the gun is intended. It is difficult for an operator to assure proper placement of the gun."No slaughter house ever found a practical way to restrain the heads of the horses, so by the AVMA's very definition, the process was not acceptable. The result was a very large number of ineffective stuns. These misplaced blows undoubtedly caused severe pain until a stunning or fatal blow was delivered. "
"The captive bolt is not a proper instrument for the slaughter of equids, these animals regain consciousness 30 seconds after being struck, they are fully aware they are being vivisected."Dr. Lester Friedlander, DVM & former Chief USDA Inspector

    • How is horse meat any different than cow meat? About 8 billion cows are slaughtered every year in USA for a meat guzzling society. Steak and potatoes will include horse and potatoes.

    • VERY well put! I'm an avid horse lover and would NEVER knowingly eat an animal that I feel is more of a pet than food. That being said, if I DID want to eat horse, I'd want to make sure it's not full of drugs used on pleasure and race horses in the US.
Also, I agree with the HUMANE way of killing the animals. The captive bolt method is not effective with horses. Hell, it doesn't even work on cattle a lot of the time!

  7. One more thing to encourage irresponsible breeding of animals, this time, horses. A horse can be euthanized for about $150. If an owner can no longer afford the horse and cannot find a buyer or rescue to take it, then the responsible thing is to humanely euthanize it. I even support putting a bullet in it's head before I would support a slaughterhouse, which will be full of bad practices, inhumane activities, greed, pollution and water/soil contamination, and most importantly ultimate disease for the humans who eat it. Yummy….vaccines, dewormers, bute, and all kinds of yummy toxins lodged deep in the muscle tissue. The decision to lift the ban on horse slaughter was not for the reasons stated. It is to support greed and the overbreeding of horses. It is to make some people rich. Just one tiny example of our corrupt government. 72% of Americans oppose horse slaughter – so how is it possible our government did? EVIL!

    Article Contents
To the Editor: Toxoplasma gondii parasites are obligate intracellular apicomplexans that can infect virtually all warm-blooded animals; felids are definitive hosts. The most common sources of human infection are ingestion of tissue cysts in undercooked meat or of food or water contaminated with oocysts shed by felids and transplacental transmission. Acquired toxoplasmosis in immunocompetent humans is frequently asymptomatic but is associated with cervical or occipital lymphadenopathy in ≈10% of patients. Severe or fatal outcomes for immunocompetent patients have been attributed to the virulence of specific T. gondii genotypes (1). We describe 3 cases of toxoplasmosis caused by atypical strains probably acquired by from ingestion of raw horse meat imported from Canada and Brazil.

  10. How is this any different than cow meat? Think about it. Did you know USA transports 100,000 horses a year due to the slaughter ban-they just get other countries to do the dirty. Mexico. Canada. Japan. Korea. The USA slaughter ban did not stop the killing of horses. Euthanizing a horse is expensive-costs several hundred dollars per horse so ranchers sell them for slaughter. Either that they starve to death. Horse meat is also a routine meat for zoo animals because it's lower in fat and higher in protein.

    Reply
    • Well, cetude, first, it DOES NOT cost several hundred dollars to euthanize a horse. The more accurate figure is $100-$300. So, the money that they receive from slaughter facilites, is a far cry from what they would have spent in euthanasia! So I guess it is ok with you to send a horse to slaughter that has worked for you..ie..paid your bills, put food on your table, etc. An animal that has provided a person a means of living, certainly deserves a peaceful end, not a barbaric one! Horsemeat was removed from dog food in the 70's as studies showed dogs dying from cancer, having seizures, tumors and so on. And not all zoo animals are fed horsemeat..mainly big cats are, but then again, they are a predatory animal. The slaughter plants (3) were mainly shut down for numerous sanitation and pollution violations, not to mention unpaid taxes! It was not the doing of AR activists. Toxomaplasmosis does exist in cows, no argument there. However, it is quickly eliminated through the cows' tissues, and besides, how many people do you know that eat raw or undercooked beef.

    • Horsemeat goes beyond the toxo point. There are many drugs that are given to a horse that have no withdrawal period…bute is one. If you would like to go on and on, i will oblige. I am an Animal Cuelty Investigator, and yes, my concentration is on horses.

  11. I know a guy who ate horse meat when he was in the service. He said it tastes just like steak except a little sweeter. It tastes better than steak. He said he had enough horse meat to know the difference and he did indeed have that same taste in several restaurants which was advertised as a beef dish. But in reality if a person can eat a cow what's the problem with eating a horse?? No mad cow disease in horses.

  12. This story is completely fabricated and made up and no one should be sharing it.Please only forward reputable news stories. Horses have been fed to other animals for years – making them fit for human consumption only regulates the industry and stops them being shipped abroad for slaughter. I don't like it but that's why I don't eat any meat. No animal deserves to die.

The method you are talking about is the Kosher style and Jahlai style. The Jewish population has stopped this and now have a Rabbi bless the animal instead. Islam still practices this method, but not in our country. That meat is either blessed like the Jewish method or if real Jahlai meat is needed they will import it. Know what you talk about before sending out nasty rumors!

This country needed a budget for 2012, and A senator from Montana got to Herb Kohl, Ron Blunt, and Jack Kingston of GA. THEY , just those 3 pulled the defunding language that now allows money for uSDA inspections. BUT, Usda has cut their funds, and allegedly no new money to others n the new budget. This article is out of OKLA. and the dont want a horse slaughter plant in their state, period. THis Ag. Approp. bill also funds the WIC program, so Obama is not one to take out the language of the horse meat; so it was signed. Ask Senator Landrieu why she did not put the defunding lanugage in her senate version of the bill, blame her too.

  18. This is another SAD case of Major Corruption by Congress! First, they vote themselves pay raises every year. (Why they deserve a raise is beyond me!) Then they have access to Insider Trading Information. Under normal circumstances, anybody else on Wall Street or You and I would be thrown in jail for the same offense. More millionaires are made in Congress during their time in office. Finally, when they leave office, they work as lobbyists for the other side using their inside connections for their own agendas. Now this, slaughtering these beautiful animals because members of Congress were probably bought off! Unbelievable!!!!!

All other articles have mentioned only 2 possible plant locations and this writer has them opening all across the US? The quotes were downright ridiculous. I think this was written as a joke. Besides, when there were processing facilities in the US several years ago, the meat was exported. I seriously doubt your local grocery store is going to have horse meat available. As with anything else, if you don't want to eat it and think it's a travesty … don't buy it.

Pull your head out, I don't think you're getting enough air. When we had horse slaughter in the US it still wasn't on the shelves for you to buy, but maybe it should have been, broaden your horizons a little. I've had it before and it was very good. People that would eat it aren't going to eat their pets or using horses.

  21. There are thousands of unwanted horses in the US that are either housed in government lots waiting to die or are starving on their own range because there are too many and there isn't enough for them to eat. Many of what are supposedly mustangs are animals that people have dumped out on government land. Many of these end up in government lots waiting to die. The slughter houses would provide much needed jobs and exports, something we need desparately in this economy. It would also get rid of our tax dollars being used to house animals until they die. Those dollars could be used for something much more beneficial. Many cultures have eaten horse meat for centuries. Who do you think you are that you can decide for them what their culture can permit?

    • It always amazes me how quickly people are to condemn because they have such a narrow scope. Worst yet, they just result to name calling rather then actually explaining their point of view like a kid on a playground without any vocabulary or communication skills. Telling me I am a moron or that I will go to hell, etc will not change my opinion. Just cause you love horses is not a reason. I love dogs and have had several through my life but that doesn't mean I would not try it. Obviously, I would not cook up the family pet as there is a emotional attachment there that would prevent me. No one is saying to go eat your pet! I am sure, much like cows, they would be farm raised for meat.

    • AND much like cattle, chickens, pigs there will be inhumane treatment of these animals. Human beings are the most cruel, inhumane animals on the planet! Why don't we clean out the prisons and start serving up some human meat??? Would you try that also???

Yeah well guess what a horse is, an animal. We already mistreat the cows and pigs that are sent to big slaughter houses that have to stand in there own shit, pigs crushed to dead, dairy cows filled with hormones to produce more milk, chickens filled with steroids to get a bigger breast. Its ridiculous. All you who agree with slaughtering horses, you have no idea what you are missing out on, horses are an amazing creature and your just being inconciderate and conceded. Maybe you should be shipped off to slaughter because noone has money to keep feeding you to be alive.

  32. As a ranch and horse owner I can tell you that unless they raise horses specifically for slaughter like we do cattle horsemeat is unsafe for any human consumption. We plug our horses full of drugs and use all sorts of chemicals on them (bute , dewormers, antibiotics, DMSO, feed through fly control, chemical fly sprays) all of which say not to be used on animals intended for human consumption. Since the plan is to use it as a way to control the unwanted horse issue I see no way of guaranteeing the safety of horsemeat.

  38. Well if this is true then I hope Obama gets drastically sick on tainted meat. This is terrible and the "unwanted" horses are there because of economy and over breeding by the breeders not because the slaughter houses closed. Dennis Chavez hauls around 10,000 horses to Mexico to be slaughtered and more go to Canada; so why hasn't that stopped the so called glut of "unwanted" horses. This encourages horse theft and dumping grounds for breeders. Proves that congressmen are idiots and don't research anything. I doubt that most can read. This is obscene and grotesque.

Should we shoot all of the people in Japan and France where it is a highly prized delicacy due to its nutritional value. what about the large numbers of horses being shot by animal care and control agencies because there is no place to put them or anyone to care for them. how many are you prepared to adopt? Just asking?

    • Maybe his girls won't be such hypocrites as you are and realize that a horse is an animal, and just as eatable as any other animal. I don't mind if someone wants to eat me, I'd happily testament my body to be eaten after I'm dead. And I wouldn't mind working as a horse butcherer. If someone would be sad enough to care about it, it's their loss, not mine. A tender, sweet loss full of protein.

  43. We Americans always let our emotions get in the way of practicality. "Horses are beautiful, loving, intelligent animals!" Well, yes, they can be. But Hindus think cows are sacred, and they still eat them because THEY ARE A SOURCE OF FOOD. I'm sure some Asians love cats and dogs as pets, but they also eat them because, once again, THEY ARE A SOURCE OF FOOD. Our culture is way too picky about the kind of meat we eat, mostly because we have more emotions than hunger. Sure, horses are subject to cruelty when they're slaughtered, but so is every other animal we eat. It's just the price you have to pay if you want meat. And I would be glad to see slaughterhouses for cats and dogs, too. We may love certain animals as pets, but if we're gonna have 10 billion people on the planet, it's time to put our feelings aside and start looking for more ways to feed the population.

  44. Elmer Pacamando? Is this Wayne Pacelle's replacement? The only actual fact in this article is that a dude name Max Baucus actually exists. Everything else is fake, fake, fake, fake, and ………..fake.

    • Hey guys and gals, don't knock it until you give it a try. Spent 5 years in Italy where my family and I ate a good portion of horse meat. Horse meat cooked in spaget sauce is great. Really flavors up that sauce.

  45. It takes 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. Maybe we all need to start eating more plant protein and less animal protein if we're going to use World Hunger as our excuse to eat meat.

  46. People have other options besides horses you morons
I would think maybe birth control and living within our means. Thats the problem no one wants to deal with people who want to have babies they cant afford, much less letting their dogs and cats breed out of control. So lets just add one more casualty to the list Obama wants to blast romney for the dog thing but then turns around and legalizes slaughter houses
Two wrongs dont make it right

    • You are the moron Rhonda…As a horse owner and used to breed them, and used them like they were ment to be used.Just think a min what are the alternatives for the horse that is crippled or just too old, stand in the pasture and starve to death? …a bullet between the and the varmits get a free meal? At least people around the world would have an alternative to 10$ steaks…..and would be good for the horses too….I have 25 head that I cannot take care of properly ….no grass…drought……..

  47. There are two varieties of the tölt that are considered incorrect by breeders. The first is an uneven gait called a "Pig's Pace" or "Piggy-pace" that is closer to a two-beat pace than a four-beat amble. The second is called a Valhopp and is a tölt and canter combination most often seen in untrained young horses or horses that mix their gaits. Both varieties are normally uncomfortable to ride.

  48. What is this world comming to. I mean why would you eat horse meat? What if it doesn't taste good and people just kill the horses for nothing. If I could I would not alow horses to be eaten. If you girls and boys still care about horses please say so at 12:00 and I will be waiting for all of you to be writing.

  49. A horses ass wrote this article. The truth is simple. These abandoned horses are being purchased by one rich SOB that ships them to Canada for slaughter and then makes millions. This one particuliar individual has a monopoly, and buys these horses for 10 bucks or less per horse. The law will allow these abandoned horses to be humanely slaughtered= PUT DOWN in the USA and shipped overseas where they can be eaten.
We the people aren't going to replace beef with horse anytime soon. Allowing these animals to suffer and spending millions to keep them fed is not a solution. Shipping them to Canada or Mexico for slaughter doesnot change anything either. In fact the horses suffer even more. These are all WILD Horses and not domestic pet horses.

  50. I have been eating horse meat all my life before coming to the States.. My daughter has been brought up eating horse meat since early age. Horse meat in Europe is as expensive as veal or beef tenderloin. Horse meat contain plenty iron and no fat and taste very good. It is about time to be able to eat it here as well!!

  51. The thing Im worried about is the shots and things that go into horses STAY in them, coggins etc…NOT MENT for PEOPLE TO EAT!! DOGS AND CATS DIE FROM THIS EVERY YEAR, but its ok now for us to eat? Sounds like OPERATIONS DEPOPULATION to me.

    • The Coggins test is blood being taken from the horse to test it – it doesn't put anything into the horse.
If the shots are supposed to be given every year, that doesn't sound to me like it stays in them. Just like with the shots given to other animals (cattle, pigs) I think there is probably a withdrawal time that once it has reached a certain point it is safe.
Plenty of people get sick off of other meat (and even vegetables), so how would this be different? Also, stricter standards would be enforced for meat that is intended for humans rather than dogs and cats.
