NEW YORK, NY – One CNN anchor would love to make one of her Tweets disappear!
Social media continues to rise in popularity. Everybody and their mother seems to have a Facebook account, a Twitter account or both. Despite it’s popularity, social media isn’t all good. It often leads to the temptation to share things with your friends or followers that can get you into hot water. CNN’s Octavia Nasr is the latest casualty of an ill-advised post.
All it took for Nasr to lose her job at CNN was 140 characters. All it took was for her to create a Twitter account and throw caution to the wind. She was fired for Tweeting her “respect” for a terror-loving Hezbollah sheikh who died over the weekend.
Nasr wasn’t just any old employee at CNN, she was CNN’s Senior Editor of Mideast Affairs. She ran into hot water after she posted on Twitter that she was “sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah … One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot.”
Perhaps realizing that her Tweet was ill-advised, Nasr tried to do some damage control on Tuesday in a blog post, saying she didn’t encourage the life work of Fadlallah – who was labeled a terrorist by US officials.
“Not the kind of life to be commenting about in a brief tweet. It’s something I deeply regret,” she wrote. Still, she praised Fadlallah for being a pioneer on “woman’s rights,” and warning Muslim men against abusing their wives.
Parisa Khosravi, senior vice president of CNN International Newsgathering, told the staff that Nasr accepts she shouldn’t have made such a “simplistic” comment without context.
“However,” Khosravi wrote in a memo, “at this point, we believe that her credibility in her position as senior editor for Middle Easter affairs has been compromised going forward.”
