ANN CURRY COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

BOSTON, MA – One news anchor would like a re-do on her commencement speech for a graduation ceremony!

Ann Curry has built quite the reputation as a respected television journalist. As a co-host of “The Today Show” on NBC, Curry is renowned for her grace and preparation, reporting on topics that reach all corners of the globe. Given the tremendous quality of her work, there was no doubt that a commencement speech given by the news anchor would be superb. The only problem is that Curry got her Wheatons mixed up and addressed the wrong Wheaton College.

Curry was given the privilege of addressing the school’s 175th commencement address. To drive home the inspirational content of her speech, Curry ran off the names of a few of the school’s more illustrious alums. Among Curry’s select names were “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, evangelist Billy Graham, slasher-film director Wes Craven and United Airlines Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer. There was only one problem: Aside from Stahl, everyone else on the list actually attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois and not Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.

The NBC newswoman on Monday sent an apology letter to the Massachusetts school’s president, Ron Crutcher, and the college community.

“I am mortified by my mistake,” she wrote, “and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me.”

College spokesman Michael Graca said Tuesday the apology was accepted.

“We thought it was heartfelt and genuine,” he said.

The 405 graduates and school administration noticed something was off Saturday as soon as Curry ran off her names, “but then the moment was over and we moved on,” Graca said. He noted that Curry received a standing ovation at the conclusion of her address.
