ICELAND – Mother Nature had a huge effect on airline travel across Europe!
A volcanic eruption has spewed large amounts of ash that has drifted over to Britain. The disruption caused by the ash is so serious that it has caused authorities to close several airports and ground numerous flights.
London’s Heathrow Airport has been shut down, a major airport that handles roughly 1,200 flights and 180,000 passengers per day. Hundreds of flights across Europe have met the same fate. Air traffic was put to a complete stop in Scotland and Northern Ireland as no flights were going out or in of both countries.
The volcanic ash is deemed a “significant safety threat to an aircraft” by air traffic officials. Hundreds were evacuated from Iceland on Wednesday as part of a glacier was melted by the volcano, flooding part of the southeastern area of the island.
France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland are all countries that have been affected by the volcanic ash. Airplanes face safety issues because of the volcanic as due to impaired visibility and microscopic debris getting stuck in an airplane’s engine and shutting it down.
“At the present time it is impossible to say when we will resume flying,” said Henrik Peter Joergensen, spokesman for Copenhagen International Airport.
If the volcano continues to erupt, airports across Europe could be severely affected for the near future.
