WARSAW – A dog was rescued from an ice floe in Poland after drifting more than 70 miles in sub-zero temperatures!
The dog was first spotted on the ice floe about 60 miles inland, on the Vistula River. Local firemen attempted to rescue him but couldn’t reach him.
He soon disappeared from sight, and was only seen again after he had drifted 15 miles out to sea!
The crew of the Baltica happened upon the animal by chance. Said Jan Joachim, senior officer, “My crew saw a shape moving on the water and we immediately decided to get closer to check if it was a dog or maybe a seal relaxing on the ice.”
After failing to coax the dog into a net, ship engineer Adam Buczynski managed to drag the dog into an inflatable dinghy. He was then brought aboard, where he was wrapped in a blanket.
The crew are now trying to find the dog’s owners. The animal would have most certainly perished, as the crew rescued him just before night fall. Poland’s current cold wave has seen night temperatures fall to -31 Fahrenheit.
