ROSS TOWNSHIP, PA – A Pennsylvania woman was killed yesterday – by her own pet black bear!
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has confirmed that Kelly Ann Walz kept exotic animals in her home, and was killed Sunday evening by the black bear.
Police responded to an emergency call, to find Walz with fatal injuries lying in her pet black bear’s cage. The cage is 15 x 15 foot, and made of steel and concrete. She had thrown dog food into a corner to distract the bear while she cleaned, but for some reason, the animal turned on its owner.
The 350-pound bear was shot to death by a neighbor while it was on top of Walz.
Police say Walz had had the bear since 2000, and that she had a license for it. Also kept at the house were a Bengal tiger and an African lion. Both of those animals were licensed by the state to be kept as pets, said Tim Conway, the game commission’s information educational supervisor for the Northeast region.
A 200-pound pet chimpanzee, also kept legally, was shot earlier this year in Connecticut after it viciously attacked the pet’s owner.

It is a cause for celebration that this barbarian has been killed. To keep a bear in this kind of captivity for the best part of a decade demonstrates that this woman was depraved and unspeakably cruel. J Steadman's comment that she was an animal lover defies belief. She may have been a "real person" but the world is a richer place for her demise and you should be ashamed of yourself for defending the indefensible. Disgusting!

I would like to remind several people on here for the negative posts and commend the ones who are positive !! First of all, I know this family & have been in contact with these beautiufl animals who were well taken care of and USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ALSO… Kelly's husband went around to schools & allowed people to come and learn about them on his property !! I personally hand fed "Teddy" twinkies (which he loved). Kelly's husband.. Mike happens to be an amazing man who spoke so HIGHLY of his love for his wife !! Therefor, if anyone could PLS FIND SOME DECENCY IN THERE HEARTS TO REMEMBER THAT FAMILY & FRIENDS ARE READING YOUR NEGATIVE POSTS… and its not really nice to deal with after having to suffer all that they are !! Again… there is a husband who loved his wife deeply… there are 2 small children.. who witnessed this tragedy and a ton of friends who are devastated !!! If you have nothing else in your life but to leave negative posts… and put people down I truly feel sorry for you all !!! impossible to find repect anywhere inside me for a so -called intelligent animal ie a human, to put another intelligent animal, massive in size and used to roaming MILES a day to forage ie natural behaviour, in a 15 x 15 godamn cage. I felt sick reading that. to turn her back casually on such a powerful beast displays all the arrogance + ignorance of this woman. No wonder it turned on her for god's sake !! just a crying shame the poor poor thing was destroyed…the bear that is.

Renee, maybe these comments aren't negative…Perhaps this incident occured and although tragic for the family, friends and especially children it stands to show that this could have been avoided and should be in the future. I own an alaskan malamute (a dog) and I love her to peices so I understand wanting pets but domestic animals and wild ones are entirely different. I can take my dog to the dog park and run her in the hills and she'll come home happy, she loves being around us and is easy to trust off leash now that she's gotten accustomed to us. However wild animals are wild, they are spontaneous so to say, you can never trust them off leash because their hormones come and go and you never know what mood they are going to be in. Thus, this bear being cages up his whole life because only luck prevented this from occuring earlier. There are just some thigs you can't take out of these animals and the real tragedy is that some people think they can.
How can you lock up these animals like this? My dog's not even a third the size of a bear and not only does she need at least 3 hours of roaming a day but she also needs to go out to the country and smell and play every week to keep her sane and healthy. There cannot be any educational advantage in owning a bear, it's the obvious truth since we have videos and pictures, books everything else to learn about these animals from and not to mention we have zoos so why is this necessary? It is not, it is about the owner not about educating people. You can tell by all the post you have made that clearly yo feel the need to be defencive about this but the reason people are responding is for the bear not for kelly ann walz, its something that these people don't want to happen again, accept it for the reality it is. You wouldn't have replied to every single post if you didn't already see the harm it has done and so as much as one can feel sorry for the loss it is crucial that this family and their friends admit that this was a mistake so that we can stop this abuse of animals and endangering of innocent lives.
